Burma - Reproductive health In summer 2005, GHAP and its partners began an unprecedented project to deliver reproductive health services to conflict-affected populations within eastern Burma. Burmese women in these areas face enormous risks in having children; the vast majority are anemic and deliver without trained assistance or access to emergency obstetric care (EmOC). More than 1% of pregnancies results in maternal death, mostly from bleeding after delivery or uterine infection. Existing reproductive health care training programs, organized in Thailand, do not reach these isolated communities and the few scattered clinics within Burma.

With support from The Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health, GHAP and leaders from four ethnic groups established a network of mobile maternal health centers which train local health workers and traditional midwives to provide prenatal care, family planning, and emergency obstetric care. This unique project tailors traditional reproductive health interventions specifically for this highly mobile and vulnerable population. In July 2007, this ground-breaking project was adapted to meet the needs of more clinics in Karen State. Focused on the most important EmOC interventions and highly effective, basic neonatal care, this project aims to implement a scaled-down version of the first project with the intention of expanding services and human resources over time. |
